Orlando Facts
Orlando ranks only behind San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Miami as the most visited United States city by foreign travelers. And it ranks only behind Las Vegas for most hotel rooms.

Located in central Florida, Orlando lies just 50 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and 75 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. For what it lacks in beaches it more than makes up with theme parks. Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, Cypress Gardens and Epcot Center are just a few of many parks that elevate Orlando into must-visit status

Called the "Sunshine State," Florida is known for its balmy, sunny weather and beautiful beaches. Ponce de Leon, in search of the elusive fountain of youth, was the first European to explore Florida. St. Augustine, founded by the Spanish in 1565, is the oldest permanent European settlement in the continental United States. Statehood for Florida came in 1845. Florida's state flower is the orange blossom, which is particularly fitting because oranges are a main export of the state. Because of its shape and location, a long peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Florida attracts millions of visitors each year to its many seaside resort areas. Its capital is Tallahassee.

The first semi-permanent settlements appeared in Florida around 5000 B.C.

St. Augustine is Florida's oldest city dating back to August 28, 1565.

Tallahassee was named the state capital in 1824 by Florida's first territorial governor, William P. DuVal.

When Florida was granted statehood on March 3, 1845, its population was 57, 921.
